Dear Professor Haeckel,
„The Wonders of Life” is selling somewhat slowly with us, and with a view of arousing further interest in the subject we desire to issue the book (in a somewhat abridged form) at the popular price of sixpence. In order to do this it is essential that the reprint should not be larger than „The Riddle of the Universe”, and thus we should have to sacrifice about a fifth of the „Wonders”. There is a chapter of a rather technical character which might, we think, be omitted; and the present references to earlier works could possibly also be dispensed with.
I shall be glad to know whether you would be agreeable to the proposed abridgment. Of course it would be made by our friend Mr Joseph McCabe.
Faithfully yours,
Charles A. Watts.
