Darwin Memorial Fund.
Sir,
We are directed by the Committee to inquire whether you would be willing to co-operate with them in the work they have undertaken. You will be able to judge from the enclosed circular what are the principal objects the Committee have in view, and if you are willing to aid them by bringing the subject under the notice of your fellow countrymen, we would venture to suggest that you should associate with you some other gentlemen interested in science and form a local || committee for Germany which would undertake the duty of forwarding subscriptions. The question whether these should be limited to some maximum amount is one which is of course left to the decision of the local committee.
We shall at all times be happy to give any further information you may require on the subject, and are

Sir,
Though the works of Charles Darwin form his best and most enduring memorial, his many friends and admirers feel that these should not be his only monument. They are desirous of handing down to posterity the likeness of a man who has done so much for the advancement of natural knowledge, possibly in the form of a statue to be erected in some public place. They wish further, if possible, to establish a Fund associated with his name, the proceeds of which will be devoted, in some way hereafter to be determined, to the furtherance of Biological Science.
A Committee has accordingly been formed (of which we enclose a list) with a view of raising funds for the above purposes. We trust that you will co-operate in this endeavour and add your name to the list of subscribers to the DARWIN MEMORIAL FUND.
