John Murray (Challenger Office) an Ernst Haeckel, Edinburgh, 12. November 1879
Challenger Office
32 Queen Street
Edinburgh.
12 November 1879.
My dear Haeckel
We have opened the box of plates to-day and find that one or two of the plates have been spoiled by rubbing against each other and against the box. Plate 80. had two || copies thus spoiled.
We have counted two of the plates, viz 67 and 80. and we find there are only 749. copies, so that there seems to be one short.
In future when Giltsch sends plates he should pack up || each plate in a separate parcel and mark on it the number of copies.
There should also be one or two extra plates to provide for loss in carriage binding &c. I have not counted the number of copies of the rest of the plates, but we will have to || do this, to yours and to all the other plates. I expect the Treasury will require us to produce 750 complete copies of the Memoirs. Sir Wyville still keep better.
With the best remembrances to the family
Yours as ever
John Murray.
