Dear Professor Haeckel,
I send you a line of greeting for the New Year. We Neo-Pagans must steal the season of rejoicing from the Churches, which stole it from our ancestors. I have been very pleased to hear that you are as serene & comfortable as can be expected after your unfortunate accident, & trust you have another happy year before you. I have been in Australia & New Zealand lecturing again this year, & was not able to acknowledge, when they arrived, one or two books you sent me. I thank you now for them. The clergy are making a desperate effort to capture the new world at the Antipodes, as it may have a great future, but they will not succeed. The Australian is too independent & I had not much difficulty in starting an agitation against them. But I was chiefly engaged in lecturing on evolution in the colonies.
With a cordial greeting & every wish for your comfort
I remain,
Yours devotedly,
Joseph McCabe
