Dear Professor Haeckel,
You will have received a proof of your article for the Darwin memorial Volume. I hope you approve of the way I have translated it, but I wish to let you know that the editor (Professor Seward) has made one change for which I am not at all responsible. He has cut out the quotation from Darwin’s letter to you about Virchow’s conduct. I am || sorry he has done this, but he apparently is very much opposed to allowing such a controversial passage to appear. I have pointed out that the passage has appeared in English before, but he pleads that the volume of essays to which you are contributing is of a special character. This, of course, is true, so I leave the matter to you. I fear he will be supported by the others in his action. The British press is apt to be hypercritical (and rather || hypocritical) in such things. I hope you will not mind much. Seward prefers your title to the one I suggested, so it appears unchanged. Do not trouble to reply to this letter. I hope you keep well, & that we shall be able to welcome you in London in Spring.
Yours very truly
Joseph McCabe
