Dear Professor Haeckel.
My publisher is very pleased with the illustrations you so kindly sent & has selected 13 of them for the biography. He wants me – with all sympathy for your unfortunate illness – to trouble a little further in regard to them. Briefly:
1. In regard to copyright. Am I correct in assuring him that your consent is all we need in the case of the following:
a) Photograph of bust in the „Bericht” of 60th birthday.
b) Photographs of yourself & assistant at Lanzerote, yourself || & Dohrn & others at Heligoland, yourself & a group of professors at Jena, & the profile portrait (1890).
c) The photogravure of yourself in 1880 (no publisher’s name on it)
d) Photograph by Gabriel Max
As to the copyright of others I will write myself to the publishers.
2. Is it possible to get loose copies of the photograph of the bust (60th birthday, 1894)? a I would like to keep the „Bericht” in my own hands until I return it, but if there are no loose copies they promise to be very careful with it.
The publisher’s artistic || adviser has chosen the coloured Jugend portrait for the frontispiece! That was not my advice, but they seem to think they can make it very attractive. I am writing to the office of Jugend for permission.
I enclose the letter of acknowledgment from Sir John Murray, & hope to hear better news of you soon. I will give all the assistance I can to Herman Scheffauer who is writing the article on you in the American journal.
Yours very truly
Joseph McCabe
