Challenger Expedition Office,
32 Queen Street, Edinburgh,
3 December 1888
My Dear Haeckel
The enclosed will show you that the Siphonophora Report will soon be in your hands. I await your promised letter. I am to be married in London on the 24 January. We will go south to Malta to examine the || rocks for a few weeks!! On our return here I’ll try to finish off the Challenger work.
The Treasury will not give me any more money after the end of March, so I have offered to finish this great work at my expense and risk. There is personal and national reputation and || pride in the affair so I am going to carry out my own views unless prevented.
Yours sincerely
John Murray
Best remembrances to all my friends in Jena.
