My Dear Haeckel
I was very much surprised the other day in receiving the degree from the University of Jena. It was a most unexpected honour, and one which I much appreciate. || It is none the less valued by me because I know it must have been largely due to your good opinion and friendship – this will not easily be forgotten. I enclose a letter of thanks || and only hope the latin will pass!! Will you kindly forward it to the proper quarter.
I hope to be able to send you the two volumes of the narrative in about a month. My best wishes for the good health || of Mrs Haeckel and all your family.
My best remembrancesa to all the members of your senate with whom I may be acquainted
Yours very sincerely
John Murray
