My dear Professor Hæckel,
I must thank you very much for your kind invitation to Jena. I have arranged with Sir Wyville Thomson to go to Germany in the first week in September. I will leave here, so that I may arrive at Jena on the 6th or 7th of September. || I will then go with you to the meeting at Munich. I will bring with me to Jena all the preparations of Radiolaria that I think may be useful to you and will leave them with you. I will also bring the Challengerias with me – so that I may get your opinion on them. Should you wish any more of our Challenger || material – surface gatherings or bottom specimens, I’ll be happy to bring them to you. Have we anything in our Challenger collection that you would like to see and that I could bring along with me.
It will be a great pleasure for me to meet so many naturalists at Munich, and also to hear you on the Development theory.
I inclose you one || of my photographs. I will write you again when I am about to leave this [here] for Germany. Again thanking you for your kind invitation
Yours ever truly
John Murray.
