Dear Professor Haeckel,
Pray accept my sincerest thanks for your kind thought of sending me the new edition of your great work. ‒ The books came yesterday and were a delightful surprise; I feel it a great compliment to have them || direct from you.- Of all the translations I have made, I am most proud of having been connected with your Schöpfungsgeschichte and its world-wide reputation; besides which the book itself interested so immensely &, I might almost say, opened up a new world to me, at all events made our own little world seem grander in every way. || I have always regretted that I was away from home when you called at our house ‒ now two years ago ‒ perhaps to inspect the strong minded young lady who had toiled at your work! I hope some day to become personally acquainted with one I seem to know so well indirectly.
With repeated thanks for your kindness, believe me,
dear Professor Haeckel
Yours very truly
L. Dora Schmitz
