Dear Professor Haeckel,
I am sorry that you will be unable to write an article for our forthcoming „R. P. A. Annual”. The friends will be again greatly disappointed.
As regards the proposed new edition of the „Evolution of Man”, with all the original illustrations and plates, we are of opinion that there will be little prospect of any considerable sale unless we publish at the low price of 12/-, and we cannot do this without your generous co-operation. If you will be good enough to agree to forego any royalty on the first two thousand copies, we will, as soon as the two thousand copies are sold, forward you £50 in payment of the right to issue the third thousand, and as each subsequent thousand is sold we will remit you a further sum of £50.
We trust that this arrangement will be satisfactory to you.
Faithfully yours,
Charles A. Watts.
