Dear Professor Haeckel,
Our library edition of your „Evolution of Man” is now quite out of print, and we are being asked to re-issue it. In view of the fact that we are publishing the work in a somewhat abridged form – and of course without the plates – at 2/-, we hesitate move in the matter. If we should decide to embark on the project, the price would have to be not more than 12/- for the two volumes. You will remember that we have already paid you £150 for the English and American rights of this edition. Should we later see our way to re-issue, we presume that you would be agreeable to forego any payment on the first two thousand copies, provided that we undertook to pay you ten per cent. on the published price of all subsequent copies. Please let me hear from you on this matter at your early convenience.
