Dear Sir,

I am desired by the Directors of the above Association to saya that they are quite willing to pay you a sum down on account of royalties; but, being a propagandist rather than a commercial organisation, they are not in a position to offer you any considerable honorarium. They would like to know the amount you would wish them to send. In the case of the English rights of Guyau’s Sketch of Morality the sum paid was £10. This of course we should be pleased to send you, but probably you would expect a larger sum. In that case would you kindly notify me, and I would ask my Directors to endeavour to fall in with || your views? Of course the £10 would be only a/c. of royalties. After we had sold 500 copies we would pay you 6d. on each copy, deducting of course the £10 already paid. Thus, if we sold 1000 copies you would receive £12–10s.; if we sold 2000 copies, £37–10s.; and £25 for each subsequent 1000.

In any case, we hope that you will allow us to have the first refusal of the English rights of publication. On hearing from you again I will immediately consult the Directors, and there shall be no delay on our part.

Faithfully yours

Charles A. Watts.
