Prof. Ernst Haeckel

Jena, Germany:

Dear Sir:

I have read, with peculiar interest and profit, your latest book, namely, „The Riddle of the Universe“, which has been translated into English and, there-in, you make the statement that Mr. George John Romanes remained, up to the time of his death, a consistent Monist according to your interpretation of Monism in its radical view.

A friend of mine, who is an intelligent and a liberal Clergyman, stated to me you were in error in this statement regarding Romanes and that he, prior to his death, renounced these views. He refers me to a Volume of posthumous papers editeda by the Canon of Westminster, Englandb, his life-long friend, called „Thoughts On Religion“ || in which the compiler positively states that Romanes embraced the Christian faith and died in the same.

I am anxious to know whether you have any facts to controvert this book, because, as you have intimated that your own book was written in 1900, whereas the other work was published in 1895, it would seem that you would have had access to it and could not have made the statement which you have in your book, unless you had knowledge to controvert the above work.

Can you not enlighten me and very greatly oblige,

Truly yours,

N. B. Danforth
