THE ACADEMY,

A WEEKLY REVIEW OF LITERATURE, SCIENCE, AND ART.

OFFICES: 43, WELLINGTON STREET, STRAND,

LONDON, W. C. Nov. 11. 1874

Dear Sir,

It has long been my wish to ask you to write an article for me in the Academy: and would now request to know if it will be agreeable for you to undertake a book on the Elements of Embryology by Dr. Michael Foster of Cambridge and Mr. F. Balfour a very remarkable young man Dr. Foster’s pupil. The book contains some original work which will interest you. You can write in German, & the English translation will be submitted to your revision before publication.

I sent a letter to the Editor of your excellent Literaturzeitung making the amende honorable for a paragraph we had taken from one of the German papers about the University of Jena. ||

May I ask you to send me the copy containing it if it has been published. And I shall be very glad, if you will mention to the Editor, that we would exchange the Academy with the Literaturzeitung – each sending post free. This is an act of comity we are doing with several of the best foreign Journals; and I feel that there is a certain analogy between the Literaturzeitung and the Academy which may be expressed as follows:

Lit. CentralblattAthenaeum.

We are both running our adversaries to earth, and the fittest will no doubt in both cases survive.

With great respect

Your faithful servant
