I am instructed by the Director of the Philosophical Institution to convey to you their cordial invitation to lecture to the Members during the forthcoming lecture Session of 1886–87, which extends from November to the end of February. I need scarcely say how delightedthe Directors would be were you to honour the Institution by lecturing to its Members. It may not be wrong place to add that the Institution has been in existence for over half a century and during that period has had in its lecture roll the foremost names in literature, science and art.
Should you honour then by accepting the Invitation, the Directors would not bind you down to any particular line of subject, but rather leave that to generally as also choice of subject. One lecture generally occupies one hour.
With regard to fee and expenses we would be as generous, as possible, and in any respect endeavour to meet your wishes.
