Prof. Ernst Haeckel,
Jena, Germany.
Dear Sir:
I am an enthusiastic believer in the law of Evolution, and a great admirer of your writings, and have all of your works in my private library that have been translated into English.
A prominent chergyman who is editor of the state organ of the Weslyan Methodist denomination, is writing a series of papers denouncing Evolution, and in that he says that Prof. Haeckel confesses he committed forgeries in his books. I inclose a clipping which gives his pretended quotation.
I know similar false accusations against you habe been reported in time past, but this one claims to have occurred recently, within the past year.
Will you not be so kind as to let me know the truth in the matter? And so if not true that I may denounce the slander?
Yours fort he truth.
C. W. Bennett.
Member of Am. Ass’n for the Advancement of Science.
I inclose silver for return postage which is the best I can do.
