My dear Haeckel
Today I hear our efforts to induce the Government to make more presentations of the Challenger Report to Scientific Institutions is likely to be partially successful.
They have provisionally consented to give about 60 of the remaining 100 copies to Scientific Institutions in various parts of the world.
There is at present || a sort of rush for the purchase of odd volumes to complete sets now in the hands of private peoplea. A little more pressure from the press and I believe the Government would clear out the stock of odd volumes that are not sold within the next few months, by presentation to Institutions.
If you know any Institutions where a complete || set of the Challenger Publications would be well placed let me know and if I can I’ll give effect to your views At present the following places in Germany receive copies.
Berlin. Königliche Akademie der Wissenschaften
Göttingen. Königliche Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften
Heidelberg. Universität
Jena. Medizinisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Gesellschaft
Leipzig. Königlich Sächsische Gesellschaft
Munich. Königlich Bayerische Gesellschaft
Strasburg. Universität
I would rather see the publications go where there are working students. Complete sets of the Publications will likely now rise in price, as there are orders for more sets than can be supplied.
Yours sincerely
John Murray.
