I was very glad to read of the success of the celebration of your fête – and wish that I could have been there. You & others must not suppose because the English did not send telegrams etc. that they did not think of you. It is not the custom in England || to do these things and we do not know what is the usual course to follow. I hope very much that your rheumatism will allow you to come here in August. I am sure you will enjoy it if you come. The place will be beautiful then and you will meet many friends, you might perhaps give an address against the view (which is that favoured here by myself & others) that acquired characters, || are not inherited. Weisman is to give a lecture here on May 3rd. I suppose he will not come again in August.
I shall hope to hear from you in the summer that you have made up your mind to accept our invitation to Merton College. Accept my warm congratulations of 33 years of brilliant & inspiring work – and on the happy & healthy life you possess after 60 years – It was kind of you || to sign yourself my ,alter’ for you are one of my oldest & dearest friends –
