My dear Professor Haeckel,

I have to thank you very much for the beautifully illustrated work on Arabian Corals which you so kindly sent to me. You must have greatly enjoyed your stay at the coral reef!

This year would be a good one for you to come to the British Association. It meets at Glasgow. The naturalists of the Challenger will be || there and many of their treasures. September 5th is the date. Will you come? You will be treated with special honour and distinction by the University & citizens of Glasgow, and can not fail to enjoy the occasion.

The Gastrula-mund – my blastopore – seems to me every day to become more evanescent. I doubt if it ever persists as either ,mund’ or ,after’ in any animal. It seems most likely (does it not?) that in the Callispongiae, the || blastopore closes & the Gastrula fixes itself by that pole. I am lecturing now on Tu. Wed. Thurs. Fri. in London & Saturday & Monday here. This lasts only for three months – January, Feburary & March. The rest of the year, I shall be chiefly here and have time for my own work.

I am anxious to see Carl Rabl on Unio development. I hope he will be more correct in his facts than in his account of Lymnæus.

Sincerely yours

E. Ray Lankester
