I am delighted to hear that you have got back home again: that you have had such an enjoyable trip, and that you have found your family all well on your return.
Some people made quite a row about your memoir appearing || in Germany before it came out in this country. Indeed before we got the plates from Giltsch. I had to write to Giltsch and Fisher about it, as the matter came up before a committee of the Royal Society, to whom it was my duty to report. However there seems no doubt that it was Sir Wyvilles || mistake or fault. I don't suppose there will be any more about it. I am here just now about Challenger business I have had to lay a detailed report before the Royal Society and Treasury, and an estimate of future cost. So soon as the Treasury have sanctioned my estimate your memoir and a number of others will be issued. I am || going dredging for two months in the Atlantic July and August, in H.M.S. „Triton”. After this trip, in October perhaps, you may have a visit from me in Jena. I return to Edinburgh in two days.
My best remembrances to Mrs Haeckel
Yours ever truly
John Murray.
You must give me one of your sketches some day!! for my house when I get married!!
