John Murray (Challenger Office) an Ernst Haeckel, 23. Januar 1882

Challenger Office

32 Queen Street

Edinburgh.

23 January 1882.

My Dear Haeckel

I was delighted to hear that you had arrived safe in Ceylon. I hope you will keep in good health and continue to enjoy tropical life. I would have answered your letter sooner, but we have been in a sort of || transition stage here. Sir Wyville has not been well, and the impression in London has been that he is not now strong enough to carry on all the Challenger Work. The Treasury have now given the direction of all the work into my hands, and have || ordered me to prepare a report on the present state of all the work and memoirs, how long before they will be finished and the cost &c.

I hope you will send me so soon as you can all the particulars about the work you have in hand for us, how long before you will have finished, number of pages letter press, || &c &c. I think I know pretty well about your work still I would like to hear from you any details. I will require to visit all the men who are working for us, and will be in Jena to see Giltsch within two months.

I wish you would send all proofs of a the Medusae memoir back to us at once with your final corrections. We are now waiting only for your proofs and some of Giltsch’s plates, to issue volume four.

I am sorry that the packages by the „Windhover” should have been so late. I understood they would be in Ceylon in December || at the latest. I do hope they will arrive in time to be of use to you.

I was in Glasgow yesterday and saw Rottenburgh. I am going though to spend a few days with him soon.

I hope you got the honorarium for the Medusae Memoir which was sent from the Treasury. || There has been a great commotion here about the successor to Thomson in the Natural History Chair. There have been over a dozen candidates, I think and hope that Ray Lankaster will be elected this week.

Hoping this will find you in the best health and || having a good time

Yours ever truly

John Murray.

There will be over twenty volumes of the Challenger report, and it will take five years yet.
