26 January 1881.

My Dear Haeckel.

The two copies of your second part of Medusae, one for Thomsen and one for myself, arrived here all safe some time ago. My very best thanks to you. It is splendid. We sent you copy of our first volume. || The second and third volumes are now printed (birds, corals, Echini and Pyenogonids) and will soon be issued by the Stationery Office.

Renard has been here for over two months, he went away a week ago. We hope to have the first volume of our deposits ready in a few months. Thomson || will read his paper on the Knight Errant next month, the report is now finished.

We are to have another ship next Summer from the admiralty to work at the North of Scotland. I do not know what are to be the arrangements. Would you like to go for two weeks or so?

If the lady who has a school in Jena will send me a few more of her prospectuses I’ll give them to some of my friends who may perhaps be able || [to] recommend some pupils for her.

My best remembrances and wishes for the New Year to Mrs Haeckel and the family. Thiel has been here working at the Holothurians. He wishes me to take a trip to Italy with him in April for a month, perhaps I will if I find I can get away at that time

Yours ever truly

John Murray.
