Kegan Paul (Henry S. King & Co… Publishers) an Ernst Haeckel, London, 10. Juli 1887

HENRY S. KING & CO… PUBLISHERS… LONDON.

65; CORNHILL, 10 July 1887.

Dear Professor Haeckel,

We are getting on very well with printing the translation of your work „Anthropogenie” which we hope to put out in the early autumn.

Will you allow me to ask you whether you wish to make any alteration in what you have said, pages 400 & 416, in regard to the Bathybius?

You are of course aware that in England some doubt || has been thrown upon the previous investigations in respect to this. I have spoken to Ray Lankester and Huxley on the subject. Ray Lankester is of opinion that you will probably adhere to what you have said; Huxley, on the contrary, considers it extremely possible that you will wish to modify it in some degree.

Huxley tells me that although he by no means considers the existence of Bathybius disproved, he yet thinks there is so much doubt about this matter that were he now || writing on the subject he should be inclined to modify, or at least carefully guard what he has previously said.

If you like to send me any lines in alteration of the passages in which the Bathybius is mentioned I will take care that they are carefully translated and incorporated with the text.

I am, with best compliments,

Yours sincerely

C. Kegan Paul.
