We have fixed our Annual Dinner for Saturday, May 2nd, and again the friends are anxious prompt that I should approach you with a view of inducing you to join us on the occasion as our honoured guest. I can assure you that the keenness of our members to meet you is unprecedented, and that, if you could possibly see your way to visit London even for a few days, you would be accorded a most enthusiastic reception. Mr. McCabe would meet you on landing, and Mr. Leon would entertain you at his London house during your stay among us.
I hardly like to anticipate the further refusal – the disappointment would be so profound; but if it should really be impossible for you to leave Germany, I must beg you to send us a letter to be read at the dinner.
