Dear Professor Haeckel,

We are all greatly disappointed that you are unable to attend our Annual Dinner on May 1st, and we venture to hope – should this letter reach you in time – that you will send a few words of greeting to be read at the gathering.

I am desired to make an earnest entreaty that you will decide to visit London this year, at a date to be fixed by yourself. We want you to come as a guest of Mr. Leon and our Association. Mr. Leon wishes me to say that his invitation holds good for any time convenient to you. June would be the best month, and, failing that, perhaps October; but you must choose the time most suitable to yourself.

During your stay among us we should hold a reception in your honour, followed by a dinner. No doubt professor Ray Lankester and other eminent scientists would co-operate in paying a fitting tribute to your magnificent services in the cause of science and advanced thought.

P.T.O. ||

Fervently hoping that you will be able to see your way to accept our invitation, and with renewed assurances of respect and admiration,

Faithfully yours,

Charles A. Watts.
