Philadelphia March 27, 1906
Honorable Proffesor [!] Earnest Haeckel.
Dear sir: –
As a student, a follower and a believer in the „Monistic Religion“; as a pupil and a dilligent reader of your famous works, and being convinced of the truth of evolution I ask you to be kind and answer me on my letter, which contains some questions concerning Monism in general and you in particular.
There is now in our city, for a visit the well known Dr. H. Karl W. Kumm. This Dr. has expressed himself before a meeting that you have changed your mind considerably. He further claimed that „You have left the way open“ in your last lecture in Berlin, „To accept the Truth“.
Now worthy Doctor the questions arises are your teachings so dangerous as to „Lead many a men astray“? Or do they not contain the Truth, that you should have to accept it from Christianity? ||
To my mind this Dr. Kumm is misrepresenting your statements. For it is absurd, ridiculous to state that you will accept Christianity – you who gave your life to the study of the truth in nature; you who for so many years has worked hard to collect facts for the truth of evolution; you who has fought hard against the greatest enemy of science in general and evolution in particular. – the Christian Church
The truth is to be found in Monism, and only there, and in nowhere else, and how can this Dr. claim that you are looking for the truth somewhere else?
Dear sir: –
You will, enclosed, find the newspaper where the report of your statement was given and I hope that you will be pleased to see it.
Hoping that you will be kind enough to answer to me I remain your humble pupil and friend,
Hyman Schor
