Herbert Spencer an Ernst Haeckel, London, 2. Januar 1872

37 Queen’s Gardens,

Bayswater, London, W.

2 January 1872.

Dear Professor Haeckel,

I am much obliged to you for the promptness & efficiency with which you have responded to my request. I should judge from your accounts of Dr. Vetter that a fitter translator would be difficult to find.

The publisher of the International Series of Scientific Books (respecting which I believe my friend Dr. Youmans communicated with you) will, I think, be a fit publisher for the translation of || your forthcoming Third Edition. Before Dr. Youmans left for America on Saturday last, I had some conversation with him on the matter. On behalf of Messrs Appleton, the American publishers, he agrees to pay half the cost of translation, & to take a share in the printing expenses. There remains, however, the question of a translator, & at present there seemed some hesitation in deciding for one who, to competence will join a willingness to undertake it. I will consult with Huxley on the matter when next I meet him.

Very sincerely yours

Herbert Spencer
