Herbert Spencer an Ernst Haeckel, London, 24. September 1870

38 Queen’s Gardens

29th. Dec. 1873

My dear Sir, –

Some months ago I heard indirectly that Dr. Vetter had left you and gone to some other place in Germany – to discharge, I suppose, some professorial duty.

I have heard nothing respecting the progress of his translations; and begin to fear that this change in his career may have caused him to abandon the enterprize.

My more immediate purpose in writing, however, is a || to learn his address that I may communicate with him. I am making some minor alterations in First Principles, for the better elucidation of certain preliminary propositions; and I am desirous that the German version should contain these improvements.

I hope you find that the progress of the Evolution doctrine in Germany continues to be as satisfactory to you as it has hitherto been.

Sincerely yours

Herbert Spencer
