Professor Ernst Haeckel,
Jena, Germany,
My Dear Friend:
Under separate cover, I mail to your adress as my compliments, a copy of my „Modern Thought“ in a neat book form. The book is illustrated and is intended as a “Reply” to Sir Oliver Lodge’s Presidential Adress and also as a brief summary of pure Science an rational Philosophy.
As your name and works are prominently mentioned in it, I would be pleased to have you read it, and if it meets to your approval, I would thank you sincerely for a brief opinion and a $ 10 or $ 15 order to help me out on the printing bill, as I have to support an invalid wife and myself with my literary work. The wholesale price is 50 cents, retail 75 cents and postage. I shall be pleased to let you have them at wholesale. By such an order distributed among your intellectual friends, you might make others happy, and I am sure you wold make me happy.
Hoping that you will enjoy the little volume, which is perhaps as good a brief Summary of advanced pure Science and rational Philosophy as is now on the market.
Yours truly
Henry Olerich
