As a reader of your writings I am interested in knowing whether the following extract from a religious publication in this country is true or not.
“Prof. Ernst Heckel [!] evolutions most eminent, as well as its most redoubtable champion, has lately published a plaint more pitiful than Elijah’s ’I, even I only, am left’. Prof. L. T. Townsend thus quotes from one of his latest deliverances. “Most modern investigators of science have come to the conclusion that the doctrine of evolution and particularly Darwinism is an error and cannot be maintained.”
This quotation is from The United Presbyterian and has been copied from The Bible Teacher and Student of January 1905.
Now what I want to know is this. Is this quoted statement true or is it garbled or is it a pious fabrication. I have learned to look with suspicion on the “science” of so many of the clerical papers and writers that this especially aroused me to make the above inquiry.
If you can see your way clear to answer this communication I shall consider it a favor and an honor.

P. S. After reading this over I think that I should have stated that the quotation in question is taken from an article in the above named publication attacking the theory of evolution from the old ecclesiastic standpoint. E. T. B.
