Dear Prof. Haeckel

I am sorry to trouble you too soon again, but I have to ask a kindness of you. There is to be a chair of General Biology opened in Dundee at the new University College, and I intend to become a candidate – but also to protest against our absurd and disgraceful system of appointment by sending in no „testimonials” as they are called. Still one must have some credentials, and I propose offering the Electoral Body the names of a few biologists as references. May I mention yours? The only other candidate so far as I know is Mr W. E. Hoyle of the Challenger office, the others having withdrawn in my favour.
