Professor Haeckel,

Jena University.

Dear Sir,

From this far off portion of the globe I write to express my warmest thanks for the great pleasure your book – The Evolution of Man has given me. I am trusting that your life will be spared for many years longer, so that you may write many more works on this great subject. I feel I owe you a debt I can never adequately repay – first The Riddle of the Universe and then for The Evolution of Man. These books have turned my thoughts into fruitful channels of research and thinking. I am in doubt on one point. Will you enlighten me please. Have we any evidence as to the constitution of the animals from which man and the higher apes sprang? Are they hypothetical forms?

Believe me dear Professor,

Your obedient and grateful servant,

H. S. Doubleday
