Dear Professor Haeckel,
As you may notice by the change of address, I have been moving to a new house, & been very busy for a long time. Now I have to thank you for various books & papers you have sent me – in particular for the very handsome „birthday” volumes which you sent through Mr. Scheffauer. I very much appreciate your kind remembrance of me, & am always glad to pass on the news of you to Rationalists here.
You have no doubt seen the little book in which I have lately castigated Sir Oliver Lodge. He is the only man of science here that criticized you, &, as he has not acted fairly, I have been severe. He is almost alone, & much despised, among scientific men here, but unfortunately very few of them will speak out about religion. We keep up the fight as well as we can, & the Churches are losing ground every year. They are all in despair, & it is easy work to attack them intellectually. But for their wealth & organization we could soon finish them. However, we are winning. In London only about a million in 7½ million people ever go near a church. That is something.
Yours very sincerely
Joseph McCabe
