Dear Professor Haeckel,
Many thanks for the books you have been so good as to send me. I very much treasure the autographed copies of your works, & I have now many of them.
I should very much like to spend a few days in Jena before long, & so will be glad if you will tell me whether you are likely to remain at Jena during the Spring. I should not be attracted to it at present, as I am busy, unless I can see you there. Of course, I would not ask much of your time, but would like to have a talk with you in your kingdom. I thought of || coming in April, but if you are not likely to be in Jena then I will make it convenient to come in May or March, or any month you will be there. Please send me a postcard to say if you will be in Jena in April, & if not, when.
I am sorry to hear your health is troubling you again. It is a great disappointment to us not to see you in England – & so, as the mountain will not come to Mohammed, the prophet must go to the mountain.
With kindest regards
Yours very truly
Joseph McCabe
