Dear Professor Haeckel

You will observe in last weeks nature that the Office of keeper of Owens College Manchester is vacant.

After aquainting myself as to the duties required I believe it will suit me. As you will be aware I have had charge of the large Collections made by the Challenger since our return and have assisted to a considerable extent in passing the various || reports through the press.

And as the Challenger work is now drawing to a close I purpose offering myself as a candidate for the above Office.

Applications with testimonials are to be sent in by the 28th February. I shall highly esteem one from you which I believe will add considerably to my success.

Accept my sincere regards and believe my yours ever truly
