Dear Professor Haeckel,

I thank you most heartily for your kindness in sending me the testimonial which I ventured to ask.

Now, however, my less partial friends all advise me to wait and work awhile, until some more hopefully-possible opening presents itself. Moreover Prof. T. Jeffrey Parker has become a candidate, against whom I should not care to stand. Therefore I shall not apply, but may perhaps be allowed to use your testimonial another time.
