My Dear Professor,
I intended long ago to have written to thank you for the letter you gave me when applying for a situation at Singapore. Although I had a good chance, some one more favoured than I got the place. After seven years in the paradise of Ceylon I find it very hard to struggle for life in this climateless England. I have not quite decided, but I think that early next year I shall try my fortune in Australia, – Queensland. I think if I should not be taking too great a liberty I || should like to ask if some time you would give me your photograph as a memento your visit when I was in Ceylon. I trust that you are well and that you have many years before you to do your great work.
Believe me.
Your sincere pupil
W. Knight James.
