John Murray an Ernst Haeckel, Corranmore, 19. Juli 1896

Corranmore,

Oban. N. B.

19 July 1896.

My dear Haeckel

this will be handed to you by my friend Professor Crystal of the University of Edinburgh. I think you met him on one of your visits to Edinburgh. He is on a visit to Germany with his wife and some of || the members of his family, and intends to visit Jena. I have urged him to call for you and this note is by way of an introduction.

I have the diatomist ‒ Cleve from Upsala ‒ with me here, and we have been engaged in Plankton researches. || He is very enthusiastic but I fear he falls into errors from having worked very little at the living forms. He has now however become interested in these and says the great future for diatomists is in working at the Plankton forms. We think we have made out some curious || facts in the reproduction of pelagic diatoms. Mr George Murray of the British Museum is publishing the results.

I am expecting to see Dr Schultze in Edinburgh next month.

With the best wishes for Mrs Haeckels better health.

Yours ever sincerely

John Murray
