Dear Professor Haeckel,

We want to obtain your generous co-operation in a big propagandist effort. The proposal is to somewhat abridge and simplify „The Evolution of Man” as published by us, and to issue in two sixpenny parts. This will entail a heavy expenditure, and possibly a serious loss; but we are disposed to undertake the risk if our responsibility be minimised.

What we solicit of you is permission for Mr. McCabe to abridge and simplify the work, and for us to publish on condition that we pay you one thousand marks within one year of publication.

The proposal we have here made is intended to assist in popularising the teaching of Evolution, and for such a worthy object we are confident that we shall have your best wishes.

Faithfully yours,

Charles A. Watts.
